1. Your Tax Figures
Every calculation happens locally, in JavaScript running in your browser. There is no account, no login, and no server that receives your return. We never see your income, withholding, filing status, dependents, property figures, or results, and we have no ability to retrieve them.
2. Storage On Your Device
So that your work is not lost between visits, the estimator saves your profiles in your browser's local storage — a private area of your own browser that this site can read back on your next visit. Two kinds of entries are stored:
-
Your saved profiles (
tax-estimator-data): the figures and selections you entered, grouped by tax year and profile name. - Your display preference: whether you chose the light or dark theme.
This data stays on your device. It is not sent to us, not backed up, and not readable by any other website. Because it lives in the browser, anyone else using the same browser profile on the same computer can see your saved figures — keep that in mind on a shared or public machine.
You can remove it at any time: delete a profile from within the estimator, or clear site data for this site in your browser settings. Clearing it removes your saved figures permanently, since we hold no copy.
3. Analytics
The estimator uses Google Analytics, loaded through Google Tag Manager, to understand how the tool is used and which parts deserve improvement. Google Analytics sets its own cookies containing a random identifier, and receives standard web request information: your IP address, approximate location derived from it, browser and device type, the pages you view, and the site or search that referred you.
In addition, the site records that certain features were used. These events carry the event name only:
- that a calculation produced a changed result;
- that a W-2 entry was added, edited or deleted, that filing status, dependents or the deduction method were changed;
- that a help topic or guide was opened, the intro was expanded, the theme was switched, data was exported or imported, or the like/dislike buttons were pressed.
No values are attached to these events. We record that a filing status was changed, not which one you chose; that a calculation ran, not what it produced. No dollar amount you type or option you select is transmitted.
Google Analytics is configured with advertising features and Google Signals turned off, so your visit is not used to build advertising audiences, and analytics data is retained for 14 months.
4. Third Parties
Two third parties receive data as a result of your visit: Google, as our analytics provider and as the host of the web fonts used on the estimator page (loading a font discloses your IP address to Google), and our hosting provider, which records ordinary server request logs. We show no advertising and use no advertising, remarketing, or social media tracking tags.
5. Your Choices
- Clear your data. Delete a profile in the estimator, or clear this site's data in your browser.
- Opt out of analytics. Install Google's Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, or block analytics with your browser's tracking protection or an extension. The estimator works normally either way.
- Global Privacy Control. If your browser sends a GPC signal, we treat it as an opt-out request and do not load analytics.
- Visitors in Europe and the UK. Analytics storage is switched off by default for visitors from the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, so no analytics cookies are set for those visits.
6. California and State Privacy Rights
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising — under the CCPA/CPRA or any other state privacy law. We have never done so.
The only category of personal information we collect is internet and network activity (analytics identifiers, IP address, and the feature-usage events described above), collected to operate and improve the site. We do not collect your name, email address, postal address, or government identifiers, and the financial details you enter into the calculator are never collected at all.
Depending on your state, you may have the right to know what personal information is collected, to request its deletion or correction, and to opt out of sale or sharing. You can exercise the deletion right yourself at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser, or contact us using the details below. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.
7. Children
This site is intended for adults preparing their own tax estimates. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
8. Changes
If this policy changes, the revised version will be posted here with a new effective date. Material changes to how data is handled will be described rather than folded in silently.
9. Contact
Questions about this policy or about your data can be sent to privacy@taxestimator.info.
